This packing process way will make your moving day a breeze.

Have you ever come to the end of your moving day, relieved that it’s all done, and you find yourself staring at a tower of boxes and have no idea what’s in them? This is a pretty common occurrence. Here’s the system that professional movers and organizers use to avoid this conundrum.

Start by assigning a letter to each room of your new home. Start with A for the first room you see when you walk in the door and then B for the next. Keep going until each room has an assignment. For closets located in hallways, you can use the letter assigned to the room closest to that closet. Don’t forget garages and tools sheds! It’s no fun hauling a full-size toolbox from the kitchen to the garage after the movers have left your house.

Then the next step is to pull out your computer or tablet. It’s time to get a little nerdy about this whole process. Pull up a blank spreadsheet and Use the spreadsheet as your inventory tracker. Don’t worry. You don’t have to know how to create equations or formulas.  Make a spreadsheet page for each room. Page A, Page B, Page C, you get it. Trust us. You’ll be thankful you know where your plates and wine glasses are at 8 pm on moving day!

Now, as you pack each box, you’ll be able to assign a letter and number to each box and write a brief description of its contents in the spreadsheet. Just follow the layout of the spreadsheet, half the work is done for you already.

As an example; Box D-3, table cloths, napkins, and bath towels.

Now you’ll know which box your little one’s special blanket is in when it’s bedtime. You can go as detailed as you think is necessary at this stage. Such as recording that sports equipment is in box G-5 and adding a note that soccer cleats are in this box so that you can easily find them Sunday morning when you and the family have to be out the door in 15 minutes.

By using this system, while packing, you’ll be writing a letter and number on each box. We suggest using large print and writing it on more than one side of the box. This will mean that your movers can easily spot your labelling and be sure to follow your system.

On moving day, have full letter-size pieces of paper printed with a letter for each room. Then, before the movers start to unload the truck, place these pieces of paper on each room’s door or doorframe so everyone can easily follow your system. We suggest letting your moving team know about your system before the move begins, and that way, your team will be able to make sure the move goes precisely as you desire. Don’t worry, they’re professionals and have seen this system before. It makes everyone’s day simpler!

When the moving day is complete and the movers have gone home, you’ll be able to unpack each box in the room it’s been placed in. This will mean all the heavy lifting has been done for you, and you can focus on making your new home cozy and organized right away.

You don’t have to be a pro to have professional moving experience. It all comes down to a little bit of planning and staying organized along the way. If you’d like more information about how to make your moving day as simple as possible contact us at Robust Moves. Happy moving day!
